Challenge to stop persecution of the Christians in the world

Mrs. European MP,
Mr. European MP,
Council of Ministers,

we call on you with an urgent appeal. According to the „Report on Religious Freedom in the World“, , published in 2010 by the Catholic organization “Aid to the Church”, in more than 50 world countries there are millions of persecuted Christians who are denied the basic human right principle of freely expressing their faith. In the last few months we have witnessed an increase in acts of violence committed against Christians, especially in Muslim countries and in the Middle East. Terrorist attacks during Christian worship (Iraq and Egypt) caused tens of innocent victims. In Pakistan, Asia Bibi, a Christian mother of five children was condemned to death for reported blasphemy. In Iraq, Afghanistan, China, Turkey, Nigeria, Sudan, the Philippines, and in other countries, many people are victims of violence, imprisoned, and persecuted because of their will to freely live their faith according to their own conscience. Today, Christians are the most persecuted religious group because of their faith.

Europe should play a key role in defending freedom of religion in the world. If Europe stands mute with regard to religious freedom, if Europe does not act, then it will support the existence and the birth of further dictatorships, tyranny, and countries without liberty. In the course of the centuries, European culture and values had a positive influence on other countries. Even nowadays, there is no other choice for Europe to keep its liberty.

The number of victims raised and violence increased against Christians throughout the world; in consideration of these facts, I would like to call on you to use all available (diplomatic) means in order to actively operate in favour of religious freedom in countries where Christians and people are persecuted because of their religious beliefs. If diplomatic steps and resolution will not be efficient, European countries should not hesitate to impose economic embargo.

For this occasion, on 7 January 2011 at 17:00, a rally in support of world persecuted Christians will be held in Bratislava, „in the place“, of the Candle Demonstration, that contributed to the fall of the Communist regime in Slovakia and in Eastern Europe.

We urge Slovak and all European and foreign media to inform the public about this activity, by expressing solidarity with persecuted Christians around the world.

Sincerely

Mgr. Marek Nikolov, President of the Civic Association “Pastor bonus”
